How to Chant Gayatri Mantra?

  • Start by first chanting the word OM ( ॐ ), Because the sound of “Om” originates from the Prana, it is known as the Pranav sound. Om is an old sound that symbolizes the universe’s beginnings and growth.

“OM” is the starting point of most Vedic mantras, which originate from ancient rituals.

  • Then, recite BHU which means the “Earth”—the physical environment in which we live. “Bhu” also stands for the Muladhara Chakra, which is our body’s root, foundation, or source.
  • After that, recite BHUVA, which means “Sky” or “Celestial World,” in which all planets and galaxies are found. It also symbolizes the Anahata Chakra, our chest region, and our breathing area.
  • Then comes SVAHA, beyond the physical and tangible world known as Swarga Loka, or Heaven, which is what Svaha signifies. It also symbolizes the crown chakra, also known as Sahasrara, which is the part of the head that is outside of our energy field or aura.
  • TAT SAVITUR VARENYAM, Tat’s definition of “That” is “someone or something that is far or beyond.” Savitu is Savitri or Gayatri’s name and Varenyam translates to “brilliant.”

  • BHARGO DEVASYA DHIMAHI, in which Devasya signifies gods, Dhimahi means “meditate on,” and Bhargo simply means “Reputed”—someone with a big reputation or fame.
